Carrier is easily one of the most well known names in the HVAC industry. However, while many people recognize Carrier's brand and leadership in HVAC equipment, few outside the industry are aware of the full spectrum of technology initiatives Carrier has rolled out to help building owners and tenants maximize their energy efficiency.

Carrier Comfort Network (CCN as it is often called), is an exciting technology that monitors your HVAC equipment 24/7.  Not only does it look for trouble, it also improves performance and efficiency at the same time. In the event of a system problem CCN alerts you the building owner as well as your HVAC service provider so that you can react immediately with corrective measures. Many times the corrective measures needed do not require an on site visit by an HVAC professional since CCN enables 3rd party monitoring companies to make simple adjustment over the internet.  Not only does this improve energy efficiency by proactively managing usage spikes or mechanical failures, but it also reduces maintenance costs by reducing the need for costly service calls.

 Carrier Comfort Network is more than just a system watchdog.  On top of active system monitoring, CCN allows you to manage the temperature in your building without ever being on site.  Furthermore, CCN provides you with detailed energy usage data, at the building or zone level, for the purpose of tenant billing, complaint resolution and so much more. CCN can also remotely operate a host of other common features such as lighting and access control for a building security system.

 A great example of Carrier's CCN in action is Junction Mechanical's refit of two, fifty thousand square feet, multi-tenant office buildings.  Junction Mechanical, a New England based full service HVAC contractor, is replacing the buildings' obsolete and in some cases non-functioning zone control systems with new Carrier 3V Comfort Network zoning systems. Prior to beginning the installation of the Carrier 3V Comfort Network zoning systems, the buildings ran twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week with absolutely no energy management. Not only were tenants complaining of high energy costs, but inconsistent temperatures across the buildings' zones also resulted in inferior occupant comfort. 

Now that approximately one quarter of each building has been refitted with CCN, temperature levels in the newly refitted areas hold within .5 degrees of set point resulting in marked improvement in occupant comfort.  Additionally, the buildings' air flows are now constantly monitored and air noise complaints by tenants have disappeared entirely.  At the present time the buildings are connected to Junction Mechanical's offices via a direct dial-up modem, but upon completion of the project, Carrier's new i-Vu product will be installed, allowing both buildings to be entirely controlled remotely over the internet.  More than just a passive monitoring system, i-Vu will provide the buildings' tenants and maintenance team, as well as Junction Mechanical, with alarms and text messages should any area exceed pre-defined temperature parameters.  As a result, energy consumption is expected to fall dramatically allowing for potential tax deductions for the building owners under 179D of the Internal Revenue Code.

 While the Carrier Comfort Network solution has been on the market in some form since 1985, Carrier's i-Vu Web based Building Automation System has just now been released to the HVAC industry.  The new i-Vu system provides all the interfaces you might want to control a single facility or a global network of properties. Access to buildings with web based i-Vu enables you to view, monitor, and adjust controls from anywhere on the globe. The new products include: i-Vu web server, i-Vu integrator and i-Vu unitary Protocol converter.
