The organizationwas founded during the oil crisis of of the 1970's. Current work of the IEA focuses on climate change policies, market reform, energy technology collaboration and outreach to non-member states.

The Northeast Sustainable Energy Association (NESEA) is the nation's leading regional membership organization that focuses on promoting the understanding, development, and adoption of energy conservation and non-polluting, renewable energy technologies. For more than thirty years, NESEA has facilitated and enhanced a network of professionals, practitioners, and other citizens in pursuit of responsible energy use. The programs and activities of the NESEA focus on the northeastern United States, from Washington, DC to Maine.

The Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) is the national trade association for the solar industry which works to expand markets, strengthen research and development, remove market barriers, and improve education and outreach for solar energy.

Debris from construction and demolition projects comprises over a fifth of the materials disposed in Alameda County landfills.
