Ann Arbor embraces LED technology

Ann Arbor, Michigan will soon become the first city in the United States to use LED’s in all of its public street lights. 

The city will begin installing the street lamps next month. More than a 1000 LED’s are set to be installed in downtown Ann Arbor. After this process 100% of Ann Arbor’s street lights will be using LED’s. 

LED’s or Light Emitting Diodes are semiconductor diodes that emit light and are a type of SSL (Sold State Lighting). A LED Lamp consists of multiple bulbs that are located within a single bulb; LED’s can also be enclosed in multiple varieties of shapes.

Sustainable Communities Awards Program 2007

The National Association of Counties' (NACo's) Sustainable Communities Awards Program recognizes outstanding urban, suburban, and rural counties whose innovative collaborations are leading the effort to create sustainable communities through economic enhancement, environmental stewardship, and social responsibility.  Up to fifteen awards will be given in three population categories to ensure that urban, suburban, and rural communities receive the recognition they deserve.
