I have recently seen a building which had grass on the roof. I assume this is to save energy or something? Can someone please explain to me why there might of been grass on the roof?

That must have been a 'green roof'. People are doing it for aesthetic purposes and/or to save energy.
The concept is catching up but it's not as simple as it seems to be.
One must be very careful ensuring the waterproofing of the roof.
