Island living gives a concrete example of a closed system (in theory, in reality there is trade) and highlights that available local resources are a must for real sustainability.

That's true. In reality there is a big difference. I used to dream about that. But raising sea levels, Tsunamis, Cyclones and the current state of sinking islands scare the hell out of me. Still I dream of that life.
